"Getting To Know God" Part I June 29, 2011

It should be our number one goal in life to get to know God. We will be spending eternity with Him for the believer. Plus in this life we can have joy when we are in constant fellowship with Jesus. So how does that happen?

John 1:47,48 “When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false.” How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

So in order for us to get to know God know this: HE ALREADY KNOWS YOU. Jesus knows everything about you as He created you. Also realize that we aren’t doing God any favors for getting to know God. This frees us up from a legalistic approach to knowing Him. That is an approach where we get up excited to read God’s word. But then the excitement somehow turns to duty and then to rote studying. Getting to know God should be like getting to know your spouse. But as well all know that takes time and commitment or the relationship does not go anywhere. But too many times we let the worries of the present world cloud our judgment. Somehow we think work, a hobby or acquiring stuff is more important than getting to know our creator. How does the crated stuff in our lives become more important to us than Jesus?

Lack of faith is the number one trouble we have. Don’t bristle over this as many of us struggle with an intangible God when we have tangible stuff to touch to try to make us feel good.

John 20:25 “So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it."

A lot of us want to see God work first before we have faith just as Thomas did. But this is what Jesus says about faith and what is seen and unseen.

John 20:28,29 “Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

IF you can be still God will show up. God desires our attention as He created us. In my own life I have seen God do many miracles. Those miracles came at a time when I was at my lowest. God knew!!!!! It is when we start living like we serve a risen Savior that we can start to have joy. Jesus is alive, He is not dead. He is also alive in you if you are a believer. When we are saved, Jesus sends His Holy Spirit to Endwell inside of us. That is why the Bible starts to make sense when we read it. That is because the author lives inside of us. We will stay on this subject of “Knowing God” for this week as there is nothing more important in this world and in this entire universe. First of all slow down and ASK, Yes ask Jesus for help in getting to know Him and He will come through. I can’t tell you how but that is the mystery and majesty of the One we serve. Ask and get ready for a miracle. Then tell me. I love to hear about miracles!!!

Have a great day and live with a joyful expectancy for life.
